Users have always been attracted to the Samsung Galaxy Note series for the big screen, but end up sticking around for the phone's multitasking and S Pen features. The most recent addition to the Galaxy Note series, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 which was unveiled at the technology trade show IFA in Berlin on 4th September 2013, boasts many improvements from its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The Galaxy Note 3 has a worldwide release date of 25th September 2013.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has beefed up both the multitasking and the S Pen features among others allowing for new ways to use its features.

OS and Processor

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 comes with Android Jelly Bean v4.3 which is a jump up from the Galaxy Note 2 which came with Jelly Bean v4.1. The Note 3 has a 2.3Ghz quad-core processor (LTE) and a 1.9Ghz octa-core processor (3G) with an enormous 3GB of RAM. Samsung has made the Galaxy Note 3 with the clear intention of it being a multi-tasking powerhouse.

Hardware

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has a 5.7-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels with a pixel desity of 386.5 pixels per inch giving the users a vibrant and sharp display. The phone sports a polycarbonate-oriented design found on other recent Samsung devices, but the Galaxy Note 3 differs in that it sports a faux metallic bezel and a rear cover made of plastic leather that has been clevery made with faux stitching giving the device a premium look. To support the demanding power requirements of the Galaxy Note 3, the device comes with a3200mAh battery.

Camera and Memory

The Galaxy Note 3 boasts a 13-megapixel rear-camera and a 2.1-megapixel front-camera, both capable of 1080p HD video. To support the storage requirements, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 comes in 32 and 64GB onboard memory variants with a microSD card slot allowing expansion upto 64GB.

Media and Connectivity

The Galaxy Note 3 brings to the forefront its touted multitasking features and delivers on those fronts. With Multi Window, the user can divide the screen in half between two apps and the Note 3 has an increasing number of apps that support the Multi Window functionality. With it, gone are the days of constantly switching back and forth between applications when trying to multitask. The Galaxy Note 3 also has quick access apps which include the calculator, phone dialer, and the YouTube app which behave exactly like Facebook's Chat Heads and get minimized to a corner of the screen when not in use and can be pulled up while using another app without changing the focus for quick access. On the connectivity-front, the Galaxy Note 3 covers the 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE networks. It also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0, NFC, DLNA, S Beam and a 3.5mm TRRS jack.

Taking advantage of the larger chassis used to house a large display this is a huge 3200mAh Li-ion battery rated at 12.16Wh. And the Qualcomm Snapdragon Quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 processor should be lighter on the battery than was the Note 2's. Can we expect battery life to be better than that of the Note 2, then? Of course it's not that simple.....

Setting a new benchmark for smartphone hardware the Note 3 also comes sporting an impressive 3GB RAM and will come with either 32 or 64GB of storage with microSD support up to 64GB as well. All in all, this makes the Note 3 the most powerful mobile device Samsung has ever made. You'll be needing all that power (especially the RAM) to run all the new S-Pen functionality and for multi-tasking apps.....

The Note 3 has simply staggering specifications, and performance to match. It pairs a new Qualcomm Snapdragon Quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 processor with a whopping 3GB RAM. And it shows. Synthetic benchmarks shouldn't be relied upon when making a purchasing decision, but if they were the Note 3 would be a must buy. It smashed our record for the Geekbench 2 real-world performance test, turning in a record average score of 4057. This beats out our next two highest performers, the Sony Sony Xperia Z1 with its score of 3673, and the Samsung Galaxy S4's 3227. More importantly in use the Note 3 feels slick and zippy. It's a truly fast phone....

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is also among the first Galaxy phones not to use a glossy plastic rear. Samsung has tried to fool us into thinking the Note 3 has a leather rear. It looks like leather, and the battery cover has fake stitching around its outer edges. But make no mistake – this is not leather.....
